Theme: “What is Design? The World Around Us”
Students of Classes X to XII of Venkateshwar International School visited the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi for an enriching and interactive session on “What is Design? The World Around Us.” The session was conducted by Saurabh Tewari, Department of Design, IIT Delhi, who introduced students to the fascinating world of design and its relevance in everyday life.
The session aimed to broaden students’ understanding of design beyond its conventional perception as an artistic activity. Through engaging discussions and thought-provoking examples, students explored how design influences the objects we use, the spaces we inhabit, and the experiences we encounter in our daily lives.
A key highlight of the session was its emphasis on hands-on learning, critical thinking, creativity, and pen-and-paper exploration. Students were encouraged to observe their surroundings closely, analyse everyday objects, think from different perspectives, and express their ideas through sketches and creative exercises. These activities helped them appreciate the importance of observation, problem-solving, imagination, and innovation in the design process.
The visit also provided students with an opportunity to experience the vibrant academic environment of the IIT Delhi campus. Interacting with the concepts and applications of design in an institute of national importance offered valuable exposure to emerging possibilities in design education and career pathways.
The visit was a wonderful experiential learning opportunity that encouraged students to question, explore, imagine, and create. It reinforced the idea that design is not merely about how things look, but also about how they function, solve problems, and improve the way we experience the world around us.
The enriching experience left students with a renewed appreciation for design as a powerful tool for innovation, creative expression, and meaningful change.
