VIS Hosts an MUN Conference
On 26th August 2015 VIS hosted its first Model UN Conference – The Sankalp Sahodaya Model United Nations 2015.  Around 50 delegates from over 10 participating schools debated on various relevant global and national issues prevalent in our society today.  The discussions were spread across three committees, namely the United Nations General Assembly, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the All India Political Parties Meet.  Topics as hot as Disaster Preparedness across the globe and India’s Land Acquisition Bill were discussed in great depth.  Many suitable solutions were proposed by the well-researched delegates, which were documented and forwarded to the UN Information Centre in New Delhi.  The proceedings of the committees were moderated by Executive Board Panels which consisted of experienced MUNers from our school.  The highlights of the conference were the opening and closing ceremonies, during which the enthusiastic delegates had an opportunity to hear motivational words by our Director Mrs. Mrinalini Kaura and Principal Mrs. Novita Chopra, which boosted their confidence.  They also congratulated the student organizing committee for putting up a brilliant conference.  The best delegates from each committee were felicitated with awards.  All in all, it was a great simulation of the United Nations, and the delegates gained immense knowledge and experience from it.

    An Inter-house Jam (Just-A-Minute) competition was organized on 21st August 2015.  Students of classes VI-VIII participated in this exciting event.  The audience was on the edge of their seats as the participants representing their respective houses racked their brains to describe a visual clip in the first round.  In the previous round, participants exercised their imagination & creativity to speak on a topic provided to them on lottery basis.

      The workshop on Gender sensitization for parents and teachers was organized by VIS on 22nd August 2015.  It was conducted by our mentor, guide and philosopher, the School Director,   Mrs. Mrinalini Kaura.  The workshop was designed to address the most hard-pressed issue in our society i.e. Gender with the changing roles of males and females.  We need to take the right step to stop the outdated Gender Stereotypes.  During the workshop, various aspects of Gender inequality and consequences were discussed and challenged.  With the help of various activities, parents were made to think radically in order to take a right step to ensure a fairer, equal society, where we all respect each other.
      The workshop was interactive-activity based, where parents and teachers participated enthusiastically and expressed their viewpoints openly.

        Rangoli Making Competition
        Students of classes VI to VIII participated with great enthusiasm and zeal in the Inter-house Rangoli competition which was held on 14th August 2015 wherein they put together their artistic, imaginative and creative skills to make bright and beautiful Rangoli Patterns on the theme ‘Festivals of India’.  All the houses displayed vibrant designs using deity impressions, floral motifs and geometric shapes.

          Radio Jockey Competition
          In order to train youngsters in speaking skills, script writing, time management and to develop their personality and confidence, an Inter-house Radio Jockey competition was organized by the middle wing of the school on 14th August 2015.
          The students highlighted the social, political, cultural and spiritual issues through acts filled with wit, fun, humour and songs.  Result of the competition is as follows:

            Heritage Quiz
            On 7th August 2015 an Inter-house Heritge Quiz was held for classes IX-X in the School auditorium.  It aimed at assessing the participants’ knowledge about their nation’s glorious past as well as latest happenings of the political and sports world.  All the participants zealously responded to the questions asked in Audio, Visual and rapid fire rounds.  Value House secured the first position whereas the second and the third positions were bagged by Valour and Strength House respectively.

              On 5th August 2015 students of IX Hilltop represented the School at the Times of India Green Drive, powered by Hero and executed by DDA.  As soon as the students reached the plantation site, they were given instructions as to how a sapling is planted.  The students were given the freedom to choose their pits while the gardeners distributed the saplings among them.  The students then proceeded to plant the saplings with great zeal and enthusiasm.  The spirit to spread greenery could be seen flashing in their dazzling eyes.  As to conclude, the students were explained that ‘Life really grows on trees and they were rejuvenated by the greenery.

                Western Song Competition
                Interhouse ‘Western Song’ competition was held on 7th August 2015 in the school Auditorium for the students of classes XI & XII.   Themes like Gender Parity and concern for environment were given to the students.  Within a small span of time all the houses gave a wonderful performance.  Integrity house bagged the first position followed by Value house and Strength house respectively.
                During the result compilation, three students namely Anitt, Siddharth and Aryan gave an on the spot performance with guitar and drums which was highly appreciated by one and all.

                  On 25th July 2015 Knowledge XP conducted a workshop on Leadership skills for the student council of the school.  More than 50 students participated in the workshop.  The workshop mainly covered three stages like:-
                  (i) Explore (ii)  Experience and (iii)  Expert
                  Ten activities were conducted where students participated with good enthusiasm.  The main objective of the first beg of workshop was to introduce the council members to explore opportunities for making things better at their end.  At the second level of the workshop students were exposed to face the problems related to any assigned job & at the final stage of the workshop participants were guided to come out with creative ideas to solve problems, so that they can become an expert in leadership skill & can further lead others.  It was an enriching experience for those who attended the workshop.

                    On 1st August 2015 a teacher empowerment workshop, the second in the series of workshops titled ‘Chintan’ was held in Venkateshwar International School.  A brainchild of the School Director, Mrs. Mrinalini Kaura, it was once again aimed with the purpose of opening new windows of mental and academic growth.  Mrs. Kaura shared her treasury of 32 years of teaching learning experiences with a vast audience of school teachers from diverse academic fields of Sciences, Languages and Social Sciences, from more than Ten Schools.  

                    In the first of the two elaborate sessions that were held, the Resource Person emphasized on the fact as to how ‘Rubric Creation’ is an effective and authentic means of performance evaluation.  This approach takes into consideration, on one end the fulfillment of the educator’s learning objectives and leaves no scope for doubt on the basis of the evaluation, at the learners end.  Further, the appropriateness of the Rubrics created is in cognizance with the learning objectives and evaluation scheme, was explained and established with a number of examples from diverse academic disciplines.  Also, the general parameters which give room to versatility and realistic measurements of individual performance were discussed.

                    The second session was a hands on workshop, wherein the participants implemented the knowledge gained in the previous session by creating Rubrics in their specific fields under the guidance of subject experts.  This was followed by presentations where possibilities and parameters to create effective Rubric systems were mulled upon.  Hence, Chintan forged ahead a new initiative that empowered teachers towards an innovative and fruitful teaching learning practice.

                      On 31st July 2015, the students of the Middle Wing left the audience and judges spell bound with their enthralling enactments on social issues ailing the contemporary society, namely – drug abuse, role of women today, deforestation, women education, public indifference  towards society and manmade disasters.  Honourable Director Mrs. Mrinalini Kaura felicitated and applauded the students for their commendable performance.

                        Interhouse G.K. Quiz was conducted for classes IV-V, VI-VIII and for IX-X on various topics ranging from wild life, language & literature, food, Indian heritage, mythology etc.  Audio and visual rounds were also added to make the quiz very interesting and informative.

                          An Inter-house English Debate competition was held on 31st July 2015 for classes IX - X & XI - XII in the Auditorium.  For classes IX & X topic for the debate was “21 yrs should be the legal driving age all over the world” and the topic for classes XI & XII was ‘Modern Technology – World coming together people drifting apart’.  All the speakers from different houses spoke very well and put forth their view points but Gautami Khanna & Snigdha Malhotra (IX –X) and Pratyush Tiwari & Arjun Malik (XI-XII) stole the show and were adjudged the best speakers.

                            Workshop on Vedic Maths
                            A workshop on Vedic Maths was conducted in the school Auditorium for class X students.  It was conducted by the Pratham Group.  The resource person Ms. Vidhi Mangla started the workshop with warm up questions related to Maths.  After that she gave some useful and easy vedic methods for finding the cube root of a number.  This was followed by some tricky ways of multiplying fast, the workshop was very informative and the students were engaged productively for one hour.  They thoroughly enjoyed the workshop.

                              An Inter-house competition was held on 24th July 2015 for classes VI to VIII, on the theme ‘Magic with Science’, wherein the enthusiastic participants handled the apparatuses & chemicals with care to show magic.
                              The budding scientists of the middle wing came up with mind boggling ideas which were not only scientific but also had magic in it.  The judges asked tricky questions to check their concept clarity.
